Books

Over the last fifteen years, I have authored a number of books and e-books. These books have covered a wide range of topics including digital workflow, location lighting, adventure photography and stories behind the images. Two of these books, A Professional Photographer’s Workflow: Using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop (7th Edition) and Location Lighting for the Outdoor Photographer (2nd edition) are self published e-books. The other two, Exposed: Inside the Life and Images of a Pro Photographer and Adventure Photography: Capturing the World of Outdoor Sports, are printed books and were published by PeachPit Press and Lark Photography Books respectively. For a complete description of these books please visit my website. What follows are brief descriptions of each of these books.A Professional Photographer’s Workflow: Using Lightroom and Photoshop

Need a cutting edge digital workflow? Curious about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and how it can speed up your digital workflow.

A Professional Photographer’s Workflow, a 565 page e-book, is a workshop in book form. This workflow, while not exhaustive will cover the main topics of a shooting workflow then move into a RAW processing workflow with Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC. This book gets down to the nuts and bolts of a real world workflow. This eBook was completely updated in 2020 and presents a workflow that can be adapted by any photographer, professional or amateur.

As digital photographers we are often called upon to shoot hundreds of images a day then deliver high quality and high resolution images that same afternoon. With the pressures of getting the perfect images for clients we don’t have time to fumble the processing workflow. Hence, a well thought out digital workflow is a must.

This workflow presents a comprehensive and tested introduction to the digital world from capture to output that photographers can implement step by step. Download this workbook and get a grip on an efficient new workflow. If you’d like to see a sampling of what is included in the workflow you can download the intro and table of contents here.Location Lighting for the Outdoor Photographer

Click here to purchase Location Lighting e-book on my Website.

Location Lighting for the Outdoor Photographer (2nd Edition, 2017) is a 361 page e-book and is packed with pretty much everything I know about using artificial lighting in the outdoors. If you are looking to take your photography to the next level and want to incorporate artificial lighting into your images then this book will give you all the tools to do just that. This e-book is filled with detailed lighting diagrams and examples, an extensive chapter on equipment and flash accessories, advanced flash techniques and so much more. This newly updated version also includes an extensive, in-depth chapter on advanced lighting techniques like HSS, Hypersync and Hi-Sync (HS).

There are so many lighting books to choose from these days you might be wondering, “How is this one different?” This is the first book that I know of that concentrates on lighting techniques for the outdoor and adventure photographer specifically. This book gets down to the nuts and bolts of using artificial lighting in remote locations. As with my other books, I hold nothing back and tell it like I see it. The opening chapter has a detailed analysis of all the battery-powered strobes on the market today and compares them head-to-head to help you make a smart decision when considering new gear. In that chapter, we also discuss flashlights, reflectors, and Speedlights. I can honestly say that I have not seen any other book on the market today that includes as much detailed and comprehensive information as this e-book does on using artificial lighting for the outdoor photographer.

If you have read any of my other books or e-books then you know I pack as much as possible into them and cover all the bases. This book is no different. I have held nothing back and in this book I share with you all of my lighting secrets and techniques.

Download this e-book and take your photography to the next level. If you’d like to see a sampling of what is included in Location Lighting for the Outdoor Photographer you can download the intro and table of contents here.Exposed: Inside the Life and Images of a Pro Photographer

Exposed: Inside the Life and Images of a Pro Photographer, first published in 2012, is now out of print. You can find used copies of this book via Amazon.com.

Over the course of the last nine months in the summer and fall of 2011 and the spring of 2012, between assignments and all of my other work, I wrote my third book, this time with PeachPit Press for the New Riders “Voices that Matter” Collection. The idea behind this book is to strip some of the glamour off this profession and share a wide range of stories and experiences to give the reader a very clear view of what it is like to be a working professional photographer—and what it takes to create top-notch images. I also discuss sixteen images in detail and tell how they were created, the story behind the images, how they were shot and also how they were worked up so that everyone can see the entire process—and what it took to get the shot. Along the way I make sure not to leave out the embarrassing parts or any of the gory details so you the reader can learn from my experiences.

This book also includes a DVD with a primer on Lightroom and Photoshop where you can watch me work up those sixteen images—and see exactly what I do and how I work (at least in the post-processing stages). I view this book as an advanced version of both of my books because it takes the theoretical and puts it into practice. Hence, if you have read my other two books then this one should be a natural progression from those—with a lot more detail on how I produce my work.

It is an honor to have a new book in this collection that also includes such illustrious photographers as Dan Winters, Joe McNally, Vincent Laforet, David DuChemin and many others. Stay tuned for more info. For more information on this book visit my website.

Adventure Photography: Capturing the World of Outdoor Sports

Digital Masters: Adventure Photography, first published in 2009, is now out of print. You can find used copies of this book via Amazon.com.

In early 2009, I wrote a how-to book on adventure sports photography. The title of the book is Digital Masters: Adventure Photography and it is part of a series of photography books being published by Lark Books, a division of Sterling Publishing Co., Inc. The book details the ins and outs of creating top-notch adventure sports images. As far as I can tell there are no other books out there that even come close to covering as much ground as this book does. In fact there are few if any books that specifically talk about photographing adventure sports at all.

I have basically downloaded everything I have learned about shooting adventure sports over the last 14 years as a full-time pro into this book. For those of you that are wondering, the book does not get into any of my digital processing techniques. Because my Lightroom workflow e-book (below) has become so popular and is much more detailed we decided to concentrate on photography in this book and not get caught up with digital processing. Some of the topics covered in the book include: equipment, outdoor gear, adventure photography fundamentals (light, autofocus, histograms, exposure, composition, remote camera work), artificial lighting, how I approach and shoot each of the main adventure sports, portraiture and lifestyle photography as well as what it takes to be a pro. The book also includes interviews with photographer Corey Rich and National Geographic Adventure photo editor Sabine Meyer – and a whole lot more.

The book is available now and you can order it at Amazon or Barnes and Nobles online, or pick it up from your local bookstore. To get a taste of what is in the book, the publisher has allowed me to create a PDF document with several double-truck spreads from the book. Download the sample PDF here.
