The New GoPro HERO 3+

It isn’t often that I post here on the blog about a new product but GoPro has just released an updated version of the GoPro Hero 3. The Hero 3+ features some significant upgrades to the venerated Hero 3. Along with the Hero 3+, GoPro also released the above 4 minute video showing what the Hero 3+ is capable of. I have to say the footage in this montage, shot by a wide variety of athletes and animals, is some the most incredible video footage I have ever seen. Whether or not you need a GoPro, take the time to view the above video and expand your world.

Some of the new features in the new Hero 3+ are:

– High-resolution, high-frame rate 1440p48, 1080p60, 960p100 and 720p120 video modes
– 4Kp15 and 2.7Kp30 enable ultra high-resolution, cinema quality capture
– 12MP stills at up to 30 frames per second
– 20% smaller and lighter than previous models
– 30% more battery life
– 4x faster WiFi (built-in)
– A new Auto Low Light feature, which changes frame rates based on lighting conditions for enhanced low-light performance
– 33% increase in image sharpness thanks to its sharper lens and 2x reduction in imaging artifacts
– SuperView movie mode allows you to shoot 1080p (1920 x 1080 video resolution) w/ the Ultra Wide field of view

At only $399 for the Hero 3+ Black Edition, this latest version isn’t exactly a no-brainer but for the average cinematographer it costs less than many of the filters we use on the front of our HD DSLRs or RED Cinema cameras. I’ll be adding a few of these to the kit at some point here.

Sea Kayaking adventure featured on Red Bull Adventure Website

My recent sea kayaking adventure on the inside passage in Canada has been featured on the Red Bull Adventure website. This trip was a personal trip and also one of my best adventures so far this year. It is great to see it get picked up so quickly. I had only been back a few weeks when I sent out an e-promo with one of the sea kayaking images from this trip. The very next day Red Bull contacted me and wanted to do a web gallery with the brand-new images.

This trip was a new adventure for me as I had never done an extended sea kayaking trip. We were blessed to see so much incredible wildlife while sea kayaking and camping in and around the Johnstone Straight on the far northern edge of Vancouver Island. Over six days we saw hundreds of orcas, dolphins, seagulls, seals, eagles and humpback whales. I have never felt so close to nature on any excursion. Below are a few other images from this adventure that weren’t included in the Red Bull Adventure web gallery.

My thanks to Red Bull for featuring my work alongside that of many other talented adventurers and photographers. Also, my thanks to Tony Hoare and Joe Nodeland, my fellow adventurers on this sea kayaking trip. Without their knowledge and logistical support this trip would have never happened. Look for a full recounting of this trip in the Fall 2013 issue of the Michael Clark Photography Newsletter.

Showcase in “Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5: Classroom in a Book”

I am honored to be featured in Adobe’s latest book entitled Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5: Classroom in a Book, which was published by the Adobe Press/PeachPit just recently. My work and a short statement was published inside the book along with a Showcase from several other photographers including such luminaries as Seth Resnick, Chris Orwig, John Batdorff and others. The book is an in-depth look at everything Lightroom and was written by the fine folks at Adobe. It also includes a Access Code to download lesson files and other online resources. Click on the link above to read more about the book.

Here is the text that accompanied my images in the “Classroom in a Book” Showcase:

For the last seventeen years, I have specialized in adventure sports photography. My work as an adventure photographer was born out of my passion for the outdoors. I started out as a climbing photographer and initially shot only rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. As my work evolved I expanded into most all of the other adventure sports and also made huge strides with my portraiture and lifestyle imagery. My clients include a wide range of editorial and commercial clients including Apple, Adobe, Nikon, Red Bull, Patagonia, Outside, Climbing Magazine, Backpacker Magazine and many others.

I have had several close calls over the years while working as an adventure photographer. Because I am a participant in many of the sports I photograph, safety for myself, and the athletes I am working with, is always a major concern. My work is as much about getting into position as it is about getting the image. On some shoots a little agony is just the price of admission. Getting the image is a matter of ignoring those niggling details and getting on with the job. Just as with my career, in the sports I photograph, everything is a risk—albeit a “calculated” risk.

Though my images depict daring adventures, they also reflect a passion for life. I want my images to stop the viewer in their tracks and inspire them to live a passionate life, one where risk is not an impediment to a fulfilled life but just a stop along the way.

My thanks to the editors at Pearson, PeachPit, and Adobe Press as well as the folks at Adobe for including me and my work in the new book.

On another note: I have just finished updating my own Lightroom e-book, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom: A Professional Photographer’s Workflow, and I will have that available here in just a few days! Stay tuned.

Fresh Eyes: Recent Images from a Nikon D800 Workshop

In late July, I taught a 2-day Nikon D800 photography workshop at the Santa Fe Workshops here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The name of that workshop was the “Nikon D800 Intensive: Get the Most from your Camera.” It was an intense two days where we covered all of the basics functions of the camera and many of the more advanced functions as well. We also put the camera to use out at the Eaves Movie Ranch right here in Santa Fe.

The Eaves Movie Ranch was set up in the 60s as a working movie set by none other than Gene Kelly. Since then, over 40 movies have been filmed on the ranch including such notable films as The Cowboys, Silverado, Wyatt Earp, The Lone Ranger, Young Guns and Easy Rider among others. Needless to say it is a “classic” looking 1880s town. When you step on set you feel as if you have traveled back in time. The set has everything a small town in the west would have: a saloon, a hotel, a church, a livestock area, a blacksmith and every other western accoutrement.

The intent with taking my workshop participants out to the Ranch was to put into practice all of the techniques we had discussed in the classroom. To that end, I set up an Elinchrom Ranger strobe with a huge 6-foot Octabank on it inside the saloon. Our model for the afternoon, Thomas, was a local actor who has appeared in a quite a few westerns over the years. I had him positioned at the bar and dial in the lighting for our participants. After the work-shoppers had finished shooting, I couldn’t resist the opportunity and worked with Thomas for three or four minutes to create the images you see here in this blog post.

Interestingly, earlier in the workshop, before we headed out to the Eaves movie Ranch, I spoke with some of the course assistants who had been working all summer at the Santa Fe Workshops. They had asked where we were headed to during the course of our workshop and I mentioned the Eaves Movie Ranch. A few of them had apparently been there several times that summer and numerous times the summer before. One of them remarked “fresh eyes” always make a place look new and exciting. And well, my “fresh eyes” were certainly excited by the Ranch since I had never been there. I was naturally quite excited to see it and have an opportunity to shoot on the ranch – especially considering its history. In fact, I would go so far as to say that these are some of the best portraits I have produced in quite a while and I will certainly be setting up some other shoots out at the Ranch here before too long.

This location, and our model Thomas, was perfect for showcasing the jaw-dropping resolution of the Nikon D800. This was the reason I chose the Eaves Movie Ranch as our location. And Thomas was not only a fantastic looking model for our images but he was the perfect crusty cowboy as well, keeping the troops entertained throughout our time on the Ranch.

My thanks to Thomas, the Eaves movie Ranch, the Santa Fe Workshops and of course the participants in this workshop for making it all happen. As a side note here, we will be offering the Nikon D800 workshop again in 2014. There will be a few 2-day versions in locations around the United States and a 4-day hands-on, in-depth, version hosted here in Santa Fe at the Santa Fe Workshops. Stay tuned for locations and dates for those workshops.

Double Covers: New River Gorge Rock Climbing Guidebooks

I recently found out that my images will appear on the cover of both Volume 1 and 2 of the latest New River Gorge rock climbing guidebooks. My thanks to Dave Pegg, Mike Williams and the crew at Wolverine Publishing for selecting my images for both covers.

I have only been to the New River Gorge once. Hence, I was a bit surprised to get both covers. I only spent one day at Summersville Lake, which resulted in the image that appears on the cover of Volume 2. Congrats to Kurt Smith and Lydia McDonald for being the rock stars that they are and for appearing on the cover of these beautiful guidebooks. If you are headed to the New River Gorge and are doing a bit of climbing, head on over to Wolverine Publishing’s website and pick up a copy of these guidebooks. Note: These guidebooks won’t be out until November but you can save some cash by purchasing them now.
