PetaPixel.com: 10 Photographers You Need to Check Out

PetaPixel.com just published an article on their website entitled, An Intro to Adventure Sports Photography: 10 Photographers You Need to Check Out. In the article, they feature some of the top adventure sports photographers on Earth including Scott Serfas, Tyler Stableford, and Lorenz Holder. I am honored to be included among my peers in this article.

My section is introduced with the following:

“Michael Clark has many talents but perhaps the most powerful weapon in his arsenal is his ability to accurately capture the grand scale on display in front of him. You can feel the enormous scale in every sport, stunt, and activity he shoots.

Looking at his photos, you can feel how long the fall will be if the climber slips, or if the rider misses his jump. This skill is equal parts impressive and important, as it allows us to share in the rush of the adrenaline-inducing sports he shoots. Except, you know, without risking our lives.”

My thanks to Alan Steadman, the author of the article, and PetaPixel for for the very kind words on my work and for including me in this article. Check the full article by clicking on the link above.

Pictureline.com: Workflow Fridays

For the last few months, I have been providing Pictureline.com with in-depth Workflow Friday blog posts on the topic of digital workflow. In case you haven’t heard of Pictureline, they are a high-end camera store and rental house based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Each Friday, they feature a new blog post on a digital workflow topic. These “Workflow Fridays” are a series of blog posts that build upon each other and mimic the flow of my very popular e-book, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom: A Professional Photographer’s Workflow. Each of these blog posts details what I consider crucial steps in a solid digital workflow.

While this series of blog posts covers a fairly large swath of a well-thought-out digital workflow they will not, and cannot replace the depth provided by my e-book. Nonetheless, these are a good primer for those looking for tips to advance or enhance their digital workflow. Over the years, I have blogged on the topic of digital workflow for Adobe, O’Reilly, ShootSmarter and a few other companies. Digital workflow has reached a fairly mature state but it is still a constantly evolving area of digital photography. As such, I am happy to share tips and techniques I use on the Pictureline blog.

My thanks to Pictureline for reaching out to me and for making this happen. Stay tuned to Pictureline.com for upcoming blog posts each Friday.

P.S. – Pictureline also published a blog post earlier this week, entitled Michael Clark: Holiday Wish List 2013, which details my “must-have” photo items and gives a brief description of why I find them so valuable for my work. While some of the items on this list are pretty pricey (i.e. A Nikon D800 camera body for example), I have also included some very affordable items like the Lenspen.

Santa Fe Workshops Seminar Series coming to a city near you!

Santa Fe. Coming to a city near you. The Santa Fe Workshops is taking their two-day workshop concept on the road next year. The first stop on this series will be in Los Angeles and will be held at Santa Monica College. Following the LA series, the workshops will travel to Austin in May, and continues with three cities in the fall (locations TBD). As a part of this series, I am honored to be teaching alongside some of the most iconic and well-known photographers anywhere on earth. In January 2014, I will be joining legendary photographers Greg Gorman, Art Streiber and Frank W. Ockenfels 3 to put on three 2-day workshops. I will be teaching my Nikon D800 workshop entitled, “Nikon D800: Successfully Using Your Camera.” Greg Gorman will be teaching a workshop entitled, “Fine-Art Digital Printmaking” and Art Streiber and Frank Ockenfels 3 will be teaming up to teach a workshop entitled, “An Insider’s View: Editorial and Advertising Photography.”

My Nikon D800 Workshop has been a huge success and has sold out twice already (with a waiting list) when we offered it here in Santa Fe earlier this year. We have tweaked and improved the workshop building upon the last two go arounds and this will be a great opportunity to learn about the basic and advanced features of the D800 so you can get the most out of this stellar camera. And honestly, if I wasn’t teaching I would love to attend the workshop that Art Streiber and Frank Ockenfels 3 are teaching – that looks like a winner for sure.

For more information about these workshops and to register please visit the Santa Fe Workshops Website. Stay tuned for the workshop offerings in Austin and three other cities next year.

A big push on Instagram

Follow me on Instagram!

I have been slacking on the Instagram front for quite some time, but the slacking is over. In an effort to up my game on all things social media I am making a big push to upload images to Instagram regularly. I am not posting images to Instagram just to gain more followers. Instagram is a great place to view incredible photography from photographers all over the world – and to see those behind the scenes images from photographers on assignment. The thought of being able to share images with thousands of people instantly is also a very powerful attraction, which is the entire reason Instagram is so popular.

I promise not to upload images of my latest meal or any non-substantive images of any sort. If you are so inclined to follow me on Instagram I will try my best to make it worth your while and I will respond to questions, comments and feedback as it comes in. I know this is a bit strange to advertise an Instagram account on my blog but I have so many readers of my Newsletter and this blog that may or may not be on Instagram that it made sense to put up a simple blog post here. I hope to see your images on Instagram as well.

Fall Holiday 50% Off Fine Art Print Sale!

To get the ball rolling for the fall holidays, I am happy to announce a 50% off sale on all of my fine art prints until November 30th, 2013. How this works is very simple, just take 50% off my standard fine art print pricing, which can be found here, and contact me to order the print. If you have any questions about print sizes or available images please don’t hesitate to contact me.

These archival prints are pain-stakingly created by some of the best fine art printers in the United States. We print on Canon and Epson printers and work with a variety of papers including both fine art matte papers and Baryta Photographic papers. The printer and paper combination is chosen specifically for each image so that each image will be rendered with the highest possible resolution and the widest color gamut. Our main papers are Moab Entrada Rag, Ilford Gold Fibre Silk and Canson Baryta Photographique. We offer a satisfaction guarantee or your money back (when the print is returned).

Note: This is a limited time offer and I will only be offering up to five (5) Limited Edition Prints at 50% off for each Limited Edition image. You can see which of my images are Limited Edition or Open Edition on my website.

Underwater Photography article on Nikon’s Learn & Explore website

For the last four years I have been writing a bi-annual column for Nikon World Magazine entitled Workshop. Sadly, Nikon World Magazine is no more, but the editorial content for the Fall 2013 issue was already in the can so to speak. Hence, instead of appearing in Nikon World, my last Workshop column has been moved online to the Nikon USA Learn and Explore website. This article, entitled Workshop: Waterworld, details the ins and outs of underwater photography with a variety of gear.

This article details three images created in and under the water with various water housings including a Ewa-Marine bag and SPL water housings. “Photographing in and around water opens up an entirely new world of exciting possibilities, but it also complicates the photographic process for pro shooters like me who take their D-SLRs near, into and under the water. While requisites include diving skills, underwater housings and, at certain depths, underwater lights, digital photography provides a big bonus: the ability to shoot hundreds if not thousands of images without having to take the camera out of the water and out of the housing.”

My thanks to Nikon for running this Workshop article on their website and for a great four-year run working with Nikon World Magazine.
